Nuclear Medicine now available at BMC!
Dr. Steve Coburn and Vanessa Garrett, RN

Myra Carwile, RT(R) RDMS

Nuclear Medicine is a specialty of radiology much like Cat Scan, Ultrasound, and MRI. Nuclear Medicine uses safe, painless and cost effective methods to image the anatomy and physiology of every organ of the human body. X-ray, Cat Scan, Ultrasound and MRI are basically used to visualize the anatomy, but Nuclear Medicine shows the flow and function by using either injecting, inhaling, or swallowing small amounts of radioactive material. The term Nuclear Medicine sounds scary but the regulations governing the use is considerable and leans on the side of caution. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist Steve Coburn says he handles, and is in close proximity to, all his patients, and in 22+ years his radiation levels have been low.

A few examples of the types of Nuclear Medicine studies performed without leaving home are:
Bone Scan - this scan shows arthritis, cancer, infection and osteomylitis. Some fractures are so small that other means of imaging can't find it. And cancer if found in the early stages has a much higher rate of cure.
Myocardial Infarct Scan - shows the presence or lack of blood circulating to the muscles of the heart. If found quickly enough it could be reversed and resulting in the prevention of a heart attack.
Gall Bladder Scan - this test not only can visualize how it operates, it can also determine the percentage of efficiency.
Gastrointestinal Bleeding - used to determine the location of internal bleeding without surgery, this study will help your physician determine if surgery or medicine will be the answer to blood loss.

I have been doing X-ray Nuclear Medicine since 1983 and I can say with confidence that (Dr. Mason) Byrdstown Medical Clinic has the most up-to-date Nuclear Medicine camera on the market today; Nashville and Knoxville don't have anything nicer.
